How Somatic Experiencing Is Different From Talking Therapy

Many people come to therapy familiar with traditional talking therapies but Somatic Experiencing (SE) takes a body-based approach that is fundamentally different.
While talk therapy often focuses on understanding, analyzing, or narrating past experiences, Somatic Experiencing works with the body and nervous system directly. It supports the natural release of stored stress, trauma, and overwhelm through gentle awareness of sensations, impulses, and bodily rhythms, rather than relying primarily on conversation.
Focus on the Nervous System
Somatic Experiencing helps clients notice how stress and trauma live in the body in posture, breath, muscle tension, and subtle energy. By gently tracking these sensations in a safe, paced environment, clients can re-regulate their nervous system, release stuck energy, and restore a sense of safety and presence.
Talking therapy may help you understand your experiences intellectually, but SE helps you feel the resolution in your body, which can make change deeper, longer-lasting, and more integrated.
Safety, Pacing, and Integration
A key difference is the emphasis on titration, working slowly, in small increments, with the nervous system’s natural rhythms. This allows clients to process trauma without becoming overwhelmed, which is especially helpful for people who have experienced chronic stress, burnout, or relational trauma.
Even when sessions are online, SE remains relational, attuned, and carefully paced, ensuring that the therapeutic experience is both safe and deeply transformative.
Who Benefits From Somatic Experiencing
SE can be particularly beneficial for people who experience:
Chronic stress or anxiety that doesn’t fully shift with talk therapy
Emotional overwhelm, shutdown, or burnout
Relational or developmental trauma
Difficulty regulating emotions or boundaries
If you’ve found that traditional talking therapy helps you intellectually but doesn’t fully shift your nervous system, Somatic Experiencing offers a complementary, embodied approach that addresses the root of stress and trauma in the body.
