Somatic Therapy for Anxiety | Online & Newcastle UK

Feeling anxious can be exhausting, overwhelming, and isolating. Anxiety often shows up in both your mind and body, leaving you tense, restless, or stuck in a constant state of alert. Traditional talk therapy can help, but sometimes it’s not enough to regulate the nervous system and release the physical hold of anxiety.

Somatic Experiencing therapy is a body-based approach that works with your nervous system to calm anxiety, restore balance, and help you feel safe in your body again. I offer sessions in Newcastle and online across the UK, tailored to your needs.

Clients often come to me after struggling with anxiety for a long time and have tried therapies such as EMDR, CBT or other cognitive talk therapies to try and use tools to manage their anxiety, however often need a somatic, body based approach. Clients learn in SE sessions not only how to feel more regulated, but also how to understand the patterns of their anxiety and what their nervous system might be needing.

What is Somatic Therapy for Anxiety?

Somatic therapy is a body-centered form of therapy that focuses on how stress, anxiety, and trauma are stored in the body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses mainly on thoughts and emotions, somatic therapy helps you:

  • Notice and release tension in your body

  • Recognize patterns of fight, flight, or freeze

  • Restore your nervous system’s natural balance

This approach is particularly effective for chronic anxiety, panic attacks, or when anxiety seems persistent even without obvious triggers.

Signs Your Nervous System is Stuck in Anxiety

You might benefit from somatic therapy if you notice:

  • Feeling constantly on edge or restless

  • Racing thoughts or difficulty concentrating

  • Physical symptoms like tension, headaches, digestive issues, or shortness of breath

  • Trouble sleeping due to worry or agitation

  • Panic attacks or sudden spikes of fear

Even if you’ve tried other therapies, your nervous system may still be holding onto stress, which somatic therapy can help release.

I have experience working with clients who are academics, professionals, business owners, stay at home parents. Many of whom are carrying and holding a lot and would like to feel more rested, calm and present.

How Somatic Experiencing Therapy Helps

Somatic therapy works by gently guiding your body and nervous system to release trapped energy from anxiety and stress. In sessions, you may:

  • Tune into physical sensations in a safe and supportive way

  • Practice breathing and grounding exercises to restore calm

  • Track subtle body signals to prevent overwhelm

  • Build resilience to triggers in everyday life

The goal is not just symptom relief it’s long-term regulation, helping your body feel safe, calm, and resilient.

Each of my sessions start with learning to ground by feeling the chair, noticing feet on the ground and orienting to the environment to notice what is going on inside and outside of the body. As clients develop more capacity to be in the here and now we may then begin to start with anything traumatic they would like to work through. The key being slower is faster and less is more. Working to the rhythm and pace of a clients own nervous system.

Online & Newcastle upon Tyne Sessions

I offer flexible sessions to suit your lifestyle:

  • Online therapy: Connect from home, anywhere in the UK

  • In-person therapy: Sessions in Newcastle

Each session is tailored to your unique experiences and anxiety patterns. Together, we work at a pace that feels safe and effective, helping you reclaim balance in your mind and body. Sessions are approximately one hour long although I can also offer 90 minute sessions. I work weekly with clients over a long period of time as this work has to be titrated. It is not a quick fix approach. Many clients ar with me for one to two years in order to feel and experience real noticeable results.
